3D Simulation | Safety Training | Performance-Based Learning
Project Overview: Designed an immersive online training experience to prepare U.S. Coast Guard operators to safely perform critical tasks aboard the 49-foot Buoy Utility Stern Loading (BUSL) boat.
The Challenge: The BUSL boat’s confined workspace creates significant safety risks during routine operations. Operators needed realistic, hands-on training to practice hazardous procedures without exposing themselves to real-world danger.
Learning Solution: Partnered with Subject Matter Experts to analyze job tasks and document operational procedures through on-site photography and video. Using this reference material, I developed an accurate 3D model of the vessel and designed interactive, scenario-based training that simulated real-world tasks through animation, guided practice, and learner interaction.
Learning Design Approach:
- Conducted task analysis with Subject Matter Experts
- Designed realistic simulations to support experiential learning
- Applied scenario-based learning to reinforce safe decision-making
- Used interactive practice and visual modeling to improve knowledge retention
Results:
- Improved operator confidence and readiness to perform high-risk tasks safely
- Received outstanding feedback from both learners and stakeholders for realism
- Provided a safe, repeatable alternative to training in hazardous operational environments
