U.S. Coast Guard

U.S. COAST GUARD BUOY UTILITY STERN LOADING (BUSL) BOAT

Problem: The 49-ft BUSL boat has extremely limited space, creating a high risk of serious injury—such as operators getting their feet caught in chains while performing tasks. The U.S. Coast Guard needed a safe, realistic way to train operators on these hazardous duties without exposing them to actual danger.

Solution: I developed an immersive online training program by filming and photographing Subject Matter Experts performing real tasks, then using this reference material to build an accurate 3D model of the boat. I rendered each task from optimal angles and designed the learning experience with interactive and animated components to safely simulate real-world conditions and strengthen retention.

Outcome: The training significantly improved operators’ ability to perform tasks safely and confidently. It also received high praise from both learners and stakeholders for its realism, accuracy, and effectiveness in preparing operators for real-world scenarios.
